Samsung launched its latest Galaxy S smartphones, the S6 and S6 Edge at their official event on March 1 before MWC 2015. Pre-launch teasers and videos ensured that they were successful in creating huge hype and there were speculations about a possible addressing of previous missteps by the company. Codenamed Project Zero, Samsung’s new launch seems to have delivered the changes demanded by the users for a long time. Now that the things are back to normal, let’s have a look at the Top 10 features of Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. We have divided them into two sections, the ones which are new or unexpected will be in Part 1, and the ones which we were pretty sure about will be included in the next part.

So, here we go, let’s have a look at what we consider as welcome changes!

1. Build Quality

Well, a year ago, with the launch of Galaxy S5, Samsung left a lot of fans disappointed with a smartphone which had a worse design than it’s predecessor! Even the most hardcore fans would have ridiculed Samsung’s reluctance to change the design and build quality. But with their later launches, the Note 4 and Alpha, Samsung gave a clear indication that they are willing to change their material choice for the sake of giving their devices a more premium look and feel.

And now, we have Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, certainly the most good looking phones from Samsung. They have finally moved away from plastic and fake metals to glass and aluminum. While the design itself hasn’t changed much on the front, the in-hand feel is certainly the best comparing to Samsung’s other flagships.

It has Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and back and aluminum on its sides. Buttons, ports and speaker grills look perfectly cut out. Overall, the build quality is the best that Samsung has offered in recent times and that’s good news for Samsung fanboys.

2. Software

Samsung’s own skin over Android, known as TouchWiz, has been severely criticized because of its sluggishness which was baffling since there was no lack of raw power under the hood. Even with the latest processors and gigabytes of RAM, the phones stuttered and stammered when pushed to the extreme and that was a huge negative. With Galaxy S6, Samsung has impressed everyone with a great software that works well with its already great hardware. The Note 4 also had a toned down TouchWiz, but this time it’s perfect!

3. Performance

A lag free flagship from Samsung was expected anyway, but the performance is been lauded by everyone who got hands-on time with S6 or S6 Edge. While a smoother and faster UI was speculated, the fact that several critics are comparing TouchWiz’s responsiveness to stock Android of Nexus 6, and even mentioning that it’s probably better means that Samsung has really delivered this time around.

4. MST (Samsung Pay)

Google initially released Wallet for mobile based payment system but it lost its popularity gradually and Apple launched Apple Pay which looked set to lead the competition. Samsung seems to be in a mood for a fight with its proprietary payment system – Samsung Pay. NFC based payment system was expected, but the inclusion of Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) is what makes Samsung Pay a better option. It means that it will work perfectly with around 90% of the existing credit card readers without any additional hardware changes, and that’s a huge leap forward in the mobile payment department.

5. Fingerprint Scanner

Again something that an Android device implemented first, but popularized by Apple’s Touch ID implementation. And Samsung implemented it rather poorly in Samsung Galaxy S5, but they have improved it by leaps and bounds this time. The most notable difference is that there is no need to swipe your finger from top to bottom on the home key, a poor technique which probably made the previous implementation less accurate. The fingerprint scanner is pretty accurate and it is Visa and MasterCard certified.
