Recently there was a report from Canalys which mentioned that leading smartphone maker Samsung has lost the top spot in India to Micromax which created quite a buzz in the tech world. But, Samsung has immediately reacted to the report saying that they still have a clear lead over the next best, citing a report from Gfk India which is based on actual sales.

The report from Canalys stated that Micromax’s market share in India was 22 percent compared to Samsung’s 20 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014, with other Indian companies Karbonn and Lava at third and fourth position respectively. Overall, Indian market grew by 90 percent with 21.6 smartphones shipped in the last quarter.

Asim Warsi, Vice President of Marketing for Samsung’s Mobile business in India said in an official statement that, “In the entire year 2014, we continued to lead the market with innovative and exciting offerings. Our volume market share in the smartphone market in the year was 35.7%, which is more than double than that of the next player, while our value share was 40.2%, which is more than four times the next player.” He further mentioned that “The GfK data is based on actual retail sales in 50,000-plus population cities.”

Dismissing research reports is not a new thing for Samsung; last year, the company disagreed with a Counterpoint report that claimed Micromax has overtaken them in the overall mobile market. Samsung had then responded saying that, “Leave aside downtrend; we saw growth in the second quarter value-wise and volume-wise. Based on actual off-takes done through syndicated research, we continue to lead the market by a significant margin. The No. 2 brand is a fourth of our size”

Samsung has lost its pole position in China to Apple and Xiaomi. While Samsung is now showing sales numbers to claim a 34 percent market share in India, given that its mobile business has declined across the world, there’s no doubt that the company is facing tough competition for now and that makes their next launch a really important one.
