Patently Mobile recently reported that a new crazy smartphone design patent was revealed by U.S. Patent and Trademark Office with dual rounded edges and a mysterious pop-up design on top.

With the simple ‘sketch’ of the new design, submitted by Samsung, we can definitely say that there’s something new in it, but without any specific details, we can’t be sure about exactly what it is.

In the image shown below, we can see the rounded Galaxy Edge like display curves on both sides and also a peculiar top side.

The patented design’s backside shows the camera placement and the sketches on the curve reveals that the curved edges will once again have similar functionality like it had in Samsung Galaxy Edge such as quick access to camera, settings, email, etc.

Figure 10 of the design patent reveals what has become the talking point in tech world right now – a strange pop-up feature that comes from inside the phone casing as if it is pushed from the other side.

Wild guesses like a probable zoom lens, extra flash unit, second camera for 3D shot, antenna for better reception, etc. are being made on social networking sites but as of now, we can just speculate. Maybe this design is for a phone that might not be released soon, maybe this is the Galaxy S6 or maybe this is the new Galaxy Edge – the image has ensured that rumors and predictions will be in full force until Samsung’s event on March 1.

Few weeks ago, SamMobile had reported that “Samsung usually tests multiple variants of its flagship device before actually releasing them. According to the conversation on Reddit, it seems that Samsung is testing at least three variants of the Galaxy S6, one with a one-sided curved edge display, another with a dual-sided curved edge display, and one more with a normal display.”

So, this design may well be tested by Samsung for Galaxy S6, but it may not be released or may be Samsung will just release two variants as they have done in the past. With the launch less than a month away, more leaks and reports from trusted sources will come out and we will be more or less sure about Samsung’s future plans.
